Sanne Wevers, who became the first female Dutch gymnast to win an individual Olympic title at the 2016 Olympic Games, is set to return to competition this month.

Wevers last competed at the Tokyo Olympic Games, where she did not make the beam final hence was not able to defend her Olympic title.

Last year, the 31 year old gymnast left the national team citing "an unsafe sports climate within the selection."

The reason for it was a conflict with teammate Vera Van Pol and the federation's failure to resolve it. But now they are on good terms.

"We talked. She then also apologized for the way she made comments about me," the Dutch athlete said. "Whether this is behind us? Yes. I think we are mature and professional enough to be able to encourage each other in getting of the best performances."

In May of last year, Wevers' father and coach was acquitted any wrongdoing stemming from accusations of physically and emotionally abusing his gymnasts.

"It has all taken a long time and it has been very painful, resulting in a lot of damage. But in the end you want to continue. We can look forward again," she stated.

The Olympic beam champion can become the oldest female Dutch Olympic gymnast in history and the first to compete in three Olympics, according to Olympedia.org.

Wevers' sister, who is also a gymnast and has competed along side Sanne at major international competition, Lieke Wevers has been working as a coach in Oslo, Norway
