A number of Russian athletes have been sanctioned by the Ukrainian Parliament for supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Among them are Russian gymnasts Vladislava Urazova and Viktoria Listunova who were part of the gold winning ROC team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Urazova (18) and Listunova (17) took part at a flag-waving rally in Moscow earlier this year, where Russian president Vladimir Putin justified the invasion of the country promising that all the Kremlin’s aims would be achieved.
Nikita Nagornyy, Aleksey Nemov, and Ivan Kuliak were sanctioned as well.
Nagorny, who won three medals in Tokyo including the team gold and is a World and two time European all around champion, has been a heavy supporter of his country's war against Ukraine.
He is a member of the National Guard of Russia, the internal military force of the Russian Federation, and the head of the Young Army Cadets National Movement, which aims at fostering “patriotic youth”.
He was competing for TG Saar, a German gymnastics club, up until they cut ties with him last April over his Russia-Ukraine war stance.
Kuliak showed his support for his country's invasion of Ukraine while competing at the 2022 Doha World Cup by wearing the letter Z , a symbol of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, during the podium ceremony.
He subsequently received a one year ban in addition to getting disqualified from the Doha FIG Apparatus World Cup and being ordered to return the bronze medal he won there, and the prize money of CHF 500.
Nemov is one of the most celebrated gymnasts of all time. He is the winner of five world championships, three European championships and twelve Olympic medals.
Nemov is a former member of the Supreme Council of the United Russia political party. He supported Kuliak over his shocking behavior.
Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials, including judges, have been banned from taking part in FIG [International Gymnastics Federation] competitions or FIG-sanctioned competitions from 7 March 2022 until further notice in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which took place on Feb 24th.
The sanctions will last for ten years and include the blocking of assets of persons on the territory of Ukraine, the restriction of trade operations, a ban on entering Ukraine and the removal of state awards of Ukraine.
