Germany's Pauline Schäfer announced today via Instagram that she will be withdrawing from the upcoming World championships that will be held between October 29th and November 6th, in Liverpool, the United Kindom.
"I’m not able to compete at the world championships next week. 😓💔. This decision wasn’t easy but taking all circumstances into consideration it is the best," wrote the German athlete.
"I put so much effort to get fit but over the past weeks my pain in my foot got worse and worse. I will have a surgery next week,' she continued.
"I have to think long term and minimize the risk of more serious injuries."
"I want to be ready and fit for the next years and I’m sure I will be back soon!"
The 25 year old gymnast has been struggling with problems in her right ankle since the European Championships in Munich, which continued to worsen during preparation for the World championships.
Schäfer will be replaced by the team's alternate Lea Marie Quaas.
Liverpool will be the first big international assignment for the 17 year old.
Besides Quaas, the German Worlds team will be represented by Elisabeth Seitz, Anna-Lena König, Emma Malewski and Karina Schönmaier.
Schäfer is three times World medalist on the balance beam, bronze in 2015, gold in 2017, and silver in 2021.
