Lorette Charpy, who recently won the bronze medal on the uneven bars at the last European championships, announced that she has torn her ACL for the second time.
"These are not the words I would have liked to give you this evening and it was hard to hide it from you," the French gymnast wrote in an Instagram post. "I broke my cruciate ligaments for the second time. Fate persists, history repeats itself... I feel empty, emotionless. I don't have the strength to write to you anymore. ~ This is just a goodbye..."
During the uneven bars final at the European championships, the 21 year old gymnast collapsed on the floor after dismounting the apparatus and saluting the judges.
Two months earlier, she withdrew from the Mediterranean Games due to reinjuring her knee.
Her first ACL tear came in March 2021 which ended her bid to make the French Tokyo Olympic team.
Her competitor, Asia D'Amato of Italy, also injured herself after landing her second vault at the European's vault final.
D'Amato, who won gold in the all around and silver on vault at the championships, will miss the upcoming World championships which will be held in October. She will return to competition in 2023.
