Urara Ashikawa, who won the gold medal on the balance beam at last year's World championships, will not be able to defend her  World title.

The 19 year old gymnast was not selected to the Japanese women's team that will compete at the upcoming World championships which will be held in October, Liverpool.

The team will consist of Miyata Shoko, Kasahara Arisa, Yamada Chiharu, Sakaguchi Ayaka, and Fukasawa Kokoro.

The team selection was made based on the results of April's national championships and May's NHK Cup.

Ashikawa is the third female Japanese gymnast to win a World title. Keiko Tanaka-Ikeda won her title in 1954 while Mai Murakami won hers in 2017 and 2021.

The World beam champion competed at the Tokyo Olympic Games as an individual athlete. She was initially first reserve to the beam final but then was able to compete when Romania's Larisa Iordache withdrew from the competition due to injury.

She finished in 6th place.
