Elisa Iorio, who was part of the 2019 World bronze medal winning Italian team, will undergo shoulder surgery.
The Italian gymnast took to Instagram to share the sad news with her fans.
"Unfortunately things do not always go as you would like… ❤️🩹 You may have wondered why I am absent in Jesolo, well today I am here to tell you. A few months ago I felt pain in my shoulder, in fact I had missed the first stage of Serie A, but after a few weeks the situation had improved and I had resumed training. The pain in my shoulder, however, never went away completely and therefore, after returning from the race in Stuttgart, I decided to do a check to better understand the situation ... The outcome unfortunately did not go as I hoped and it turned out that I will have to undergo a ' intervention, to solve this problem and avoid making things worse, although I still managed to work. I do not deny that I am very very sorry, but as you have noticed lately, luck is not very much on my side. However, I will try to be strong and I will work hard to return to the Elisa of all time," the 19 year old gymnast wrote according to Google Translate.
Iorio was not selected to represent Italy at the 2020 Olympic Games as she was still not fully recovered from an ankle surgery she had the year before.
However, she competed at the 2021 World championships where she became the third Italian gymnast to qualify to a World bars final.
She finished in 6th place.
