"Strict but fair!"

Those were the words in which Russian former gymnast Aliya Mustafina described herself as the acting head coach of her country's junior national team.

Mustafina is regarded as one of the most successful gymnasts, having won two consecutive Olympic titles on the uneven bars, two Olympic bronze all around medals as well as World and European all around titles.

The Olympic champion, who turn senior in 2011, officially announced her retirement last year. She has been coaching the national junior team ever since.

In her opinion, today's young generation of gymnasts are the strongest physically and mentally.

Mustafina is thankful that the junior gymnasts do not have to deal with the international bans on Russian sports.

"Children, thank God, are not very much involved in all this. Therefore, they do not have to say anything, they worked and continue to work, without a shadow of a doubt," the 27 year old retired gymnast said.

Mustafina added that the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown contributed to the preparation of the Russian athletes.

The Russian gymnasts won gold in both the women's and men's team final at the 2020 Olympic Games.
