Russian Olympic gymnast Svetlana Khorkina continues to support the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Instagram.

The former gymnast posted on her Instagram story an edited photo of a Russian soldier with text that says "Russian soldier is freeing Europe from Fascism again" according to Gymnovosti translation.

The photo included the letter Z, which has now become a symbol for Russian supporters of the invasion.

The Z stands for Za Pobedu  or "For Victory", as  per a statement issued by the Russian Defense Ministry.

It also included the years 1945 - 2022. 1945 is the year in which Nazi Germany was defeated.  Their defeat is sacred ground for Russia and the cornerstone of Russian identity.

Khorkina was originally named the ambassador of the Cairo World Cup, which is set to be held between March 13–20. However, it has been reported that she will no longer be attending the event.

The 43 year old retired gymnast has been a vocal supporter of Russian president Vladimir Putin and is a member of his political party United Russia.

She served as a deputy for the Russian State Duma (Russian Parliament) from 2007 to 2011. She holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Russian army.

Khorkina is married to Oleg Kochnev, who is a former general in Russia's Federal Security Service and works at Putin's administration. Together, they have a son, Ivan, born in October 2019.

She is regarded as one of the most successful female gymnasts of all time. She was the first gymnast to win three World all around titles which were in 1997, 2001, and 2003. She is also the winner of the 1996 and 2000 Olympic uneven bars titles.
