Becky Downie revealed that she didn't compete on the uneven bars today at the British Championships' event final due to illness.

"I have been struggling with illness the past 4-5 weeks and training has been incredibly difficult because of it," the British gymnast wrote.

"I managed to push through the English championships and day one of the British championships but today I didn't feel safe enough to compete in the bars final due to feeling too unwell." she continued.

"It wasn't an easy decision to withdraw because so much work has gone into the past few months preparation and I still haven't managed to show what I've been working so hard towards on bars yet but I'm extremely happy to be walking away in one piece and after a short break I'll be able to continue preparing towards our next set of trials and the major competitions later this year."

On the first day of the British championships, Downie competed on all four events for the first time since 2014 finishing in 6th place with a 50.850.

The 30 year old gymnast is the 2019 World silver medalist and two time European champion on the uneven bars.

Downie, who represented Great Britain at the 2008 and 2016 Olympic Games, was not selected to compete at last year's Tokyo Olympic Games.
