Alexei Nemov, who is one of the most celebrated gymnasts of all time, took to Instagram to weighed in on the recent sporting ban on Russia and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"From the moment my mother brought me to the gym, I have lived and live, guided by the main principles of sport. Honesty, generosity, mutual respect, support, camaraderie… Sport should be above all," the Russian former gymnast wrote according to Google Translate.
"Sport should unite people, give joy and hope. For me, this is an undeniable truth. And personally, I will continue to follow these principles further," he continues.
"What is happening now all over the world, including sports, is difficult to put into words. It hurts. The main thing I want to say now - let's support each other! This is the most important thing we can do right now. Now more than ever, it is important for all of us to show empathy, compassion and love. Because peace begins with kindness."
Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials, including judges, have been banned from taking part in FIG competitions or FIG-sanctioned competitions from 7 March 2022 until further notice in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Nemov is the 2000 Olympic all around and high bar champion, and the 1996 Olympic vault champion. He is also three time World medalist and four time European medalist.
Russian gymnast Angelina Melnikova, who is the reigning World all around champion, posted two hands clapping emoji in the comment section of Nemov's post.
Melnikova has previously shared an anti war post on her Instagram Story.
