The Hungarian Gymnastics Federation and the Hungarian Olympic Committee announced today that 2000 Sydney Olympic champion Szilveszter Csollány has passed away due to Covid 19 complications at the age of 51.

The Hungarian former gymnast was hospitalized at the end of last year. According to dailynewshungary.com, he was put on a ventilator in a Budapest hospital, due to his worsening pneumonia. His condition was unknown for a few weeks.

Csollány previously shared several anti-vaccination posts on his Facebook page.

Blikk.hu reported that he did not want to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

However, since he was working as a coach in Austria, he was required  to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Research doctor Dr. Tamás Letoha said that the Olympian had received a single-dose vector vaccine, Janssen, just two weeks before he was admitted to the hospital, hence he was virtually unable to develop adequate protection in his body.

The late athlete was the 2000 Olympic champion and 1996 Olympic silver medalist on the rings. He was also the winner of six World championship medals, including one gold, in the same event.

He was a six-time medalist at the European gymnastics championships, and the recipient of Hungary’s “Sportsman of the Year” award in 2000 and 2002.

He worked as a gymnastics coach after his retirement. He spent a few years coaching in Iceland and Switzerland.
