Lieke and Sanne Wevers won't be seen at the upcoming World championships, which will be held in Kitakyushu, Japan from October 18–24, 2021.

In an Instagram 'Ask me Anything' session, Lieke was asked if she and her sister are planning to go to Worlds this year - she said "No".

The Wevers sisters did not have the Olympics they wished for. The Dutch team finished in 11th place at the qualifications failing to advance to the final.

Initially, none of the Dutch gymnasts qualified to the women's individual finals. However, Lieke sneaked into the all around final when Canada's Ellie Black withdrew from the competition due to injury. She finished in last place.

Her sister Sanne, who is winner of the Olympic gold medal on balance beam in 2016, failed to qualify to the balance beam final. She was in third reserve position.

Last year, Dutch gymnastics was hit by allegations of emotional and physical abuse by former gymnasts.

Vincent Wevers, the father and coach of Lieke and Sanne, was subsequently suspended as he was accused by former Dutch gymnast Joy Goedkoop - who competed at the 2009, 2010, and 2011 World championships - of abuse.

He along with other coaches were allowed to accompany the Dutch Olympic Team to Tokyo.

"I don't know yet. The future is all open and unwritten," Lieke wrote when asked about her future plans. "I love to make new plans and set new goals!"

"But after this intense year I first need to take a little more time to rest and make sure I recover well."

"My 2 priorities at the moment are my health and my joy. The rest will come!"
