Larisa Iordache has officially withdrawn from the Olympic balance beam final, which is being held today.
The Romanian gymnast is suffering from an ankle injury. She intended to compete on all four events but pulled out and decided to perform on balance beam only due to unbearable ankle pain.
At the qualifications, she injured her ankle on the dismount.
"We will never understand why the path we choose is so hard on us at times when you need to let yourself go quietly to what you want to do," Iordache wrote on Instagram according to Google Translation.
"I tried and hoped until the last moment for this Olympic final. Unfortunately, again, my path is hard ... this ankle pain I feel is beyond my tolerability as a human being."
"I wanted to do it for myself. For me and for the being who pushed me on this path, who unfortunately is no longer with me and I can no longer get a word of encouragement from her ... 😞 but I know that I have the unconditional love of my family. I love you! ❤️"
"It's hard, hard ... because this time I really thought everything would be fine."
"But the road does not stop here with this unfruitful chance.
At the moment I take a break and start again when I will be ready to resume everything from a peaceful and physical point of view."
"I want to tell my coaches that I love them because regardless of the situation, they believed in me and in everything I did. And because they started with me on this road❤️🙏🏼 even when we didn't have anyone near us. @loumtlc @cristi_aerobic 💚"
"And you appreciate yourself, those who hoped and encouraged me."
Iordache has been plagued by a series of injuries throughout most of her gymnastics career. In 2017, she suffered an Achilles tendon tear during the warm-ups for the qualification round of the World championships.
Subsequently, she took a three year break and made her comeback debut at the Romanian National Championships in November 2020.
