Today, Russian women ended the US decade of dominance with an outstanding performance.

The Russians proved that their first place finish at the qualifications was no accident as they went on to win their first Olympic gold medal in team finals.

The team, which consists of Lilia Akhaimova, Viktoria Listunova, Angelina Melnikova, and Vladislava Urazova, beat the US team by more than three points.

The US team captain, Simone Biles, competed only on vault. She bailed on her Amanar and did one and a half twisting Yurchenko instead, taking a huge hop to the front.

It was later announced that she withdrew from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She is to be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.

The US team settled for silver.

The Russians were not the only ones to make history today. The British women won their first Olympic medal ever in modern day gymnastics.

They came in third place scoring 164.096, only two full points behind the silver medalists.

In fourth place came Italy, their best Olympic team performance in modern day gymnastics as well.

China, the reigning Olympic bronze medalist, could not repeat their qualification performance - where they placed third- and finished in seventh place.

Japan and France finished in fifth and sixth place, while Belgium finished last.

The next women’s competition will be the all around on July 29th.
