Last
week Great Britain’s Max Whitlock tied
the knot with childhood friend and gym coach Leah Hickton.
The
married couple, both 24, met at South
Essex Gymnastics Club when they were only twelve years old.
It
took young Max two years to ask Leah out on a date, and seven additional years to
propose. The wedding proposal, which Whitlock described as ‘more nerve-wracking than the Olympics’, happened during a short
break in the Lake District ahead of
the Rio Olympic Games.
The Rio Games made Whitlock famous. He came into the
Olympics as the current World champion on pommel horse, as well as the Olympic
bronze medallist on the same apparatus and with the team, but in Rio he exceeded expectations, winning
gold on both pommel horse and, very unexpectedly, on floor exercise, and bronze
in a nerve-wracking all around competition.
Whitlock
announced the news of his wedding on Twitter and Instagram,
writing: 'MR & MRS WHITLOCK. the best day of my life. I AM NOW A MARRIED
MAN!! Had an amazing wedding and mini moon!! @leahhickton'.
The
newly weds said they are keen to start a family
together.
