Czech gymnast Vera Caslavska, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year ago, has died aged 74.

"Vera was a fighter. She was diagnosed last year in the spring... When she did not come with us to (the Olympic Games this summer in) Rio it was clear the situation was bad," committee President Jiri Kejval told Reuters.

"She died in her sleep," he said.

Caslavska is the winner of eleven Olympic medals, ten World medals and thirteen European medals. Beside her achievements, Vera was famous for her brave demonstration. At 1968 Olympic Games, she quietly turned her head down and away during the playing of the Soviet national anthem at the medal ceremony protesting the invasion of her home country by the Soviet Union.
