By the time the gymnastics fans were hoping to see more than five members on team and more than two gymnasts in the individual finals, the FIG announced its intentions to reduce the number of team members at 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.

A new proposal which includes a reduction in the number of team members in Artistic Gymnastics in the aim of providing additional qualification opportunities for event specialists and All-around gymnasts via Continental Championships, World Cups and World Challenge Cups, will be presented in May to the council in Australia.

Teams at 2012 London Olympic Games were composed of five members, while teams at 2008, 2004 and 2000 Olympics were composed of six members. In 1996, it was seven gymnasts per team.

Between 1972 and 1992, each team consisted of six gymnasts.

In the meantime, the Gym Internet were outraged over the FIG's proposal:

gymnastics-fanatic:

This makes me mad.

aly126:

Soon enough they’ll be like… why even send a team? one member is enough… who needed team finals anyway… do they even think these new rules through?

t-nabieva:

Like what is even the point of team finals if you basically have to put up 3 all-arounders?

gymternet:

This makes less than zero sense. Like how do they have an “aim of providing additional qualification opportunities for event specialists” when teams will have no room for event specialists on a team? If anything they need better individual qualification procedures for athletes of smaller gymnastics nations, or more room in event finals (24 to 36, 8 to 12 maybe) to become more inclusive to gymnasts

shoujojidies.

why do they try and make gymnastics worse every four years

I’m glad we all collectively acknowledge how awful this is. SRSLY WHO PROPOSES THESE THINGS!!??

"providing additional qualification opportunities for event specialists and All-around gymnasts via Continental Championships"

I mean what’s the point in additional qualifying when you only take two per country into a final

I don’t understand the decreasing of team members. It only helps the U.S. which can easily put up 4 all-arounders and hurt the countries that rely on specialists for team finals.

Also, would countries with teams be able to send people to just do event qualifications or is that only for countries without teams? Because I feel like you are stopping the progress of skills on events of you don’t allow Russia and US and China to send event specialists seperate from the 4 all-arounders needed for team.

Everybody’s going to Azerbaijan! Lol and why TF are they reducing the team again?!

I’m not into the reduction in team sizes, but I am pretty excited about the idea of enabling event specialists to qualify to the Olympics, which currently isn’t an option (for instance, Epke struggled to get to London because individuals can only qualify through AA). Would make for more event specialists from smaller countries, higher quality event finals (since specialists won’t have to dilute their event training by training AA to qualify), and allow smaller countries to be much more competitive at the Olympic level. Still, it shouldn’t come at the expense of teams.

On a side note: a gymnast has to compete at at least three World cups in order to be eligible for prize money.

The have also accepted the change of nationality of fourteen gymnasts.
