Romanian national team head coach Octavian Bellu has announced that he will be running for the seat of president of the Romanian Olympic Committee. The announcement came after the resignation of the former president Octavian Morariu.

Morariu resigned a few weeks ago stating that his tasks as a member of the International Olympic Committee as well as a member of the European Rugby Association stood in the way of his job as a president of the Romanian Olympic Committee, hence he decided to step down.

The Romanian Olympic Committee is currently being run by its three vice-presidents Alina Petrache, Nicu Vlad and Elisabeta Lipă.

The seat of president of the Romanian Olympic Committee has become the interest of many people involved in sports as well as former athletes. What was a rumor at first, this week Romanian national team head coach Octavian Bellu, officially announced that he has filed his candidacy paperwork for the recent vacant seat.

Bellu has extended experience in management and leadership. He had also been the president of Sport National Agency. However, he doesn’t promise miraculous solutions, but will support and provide resources for the athletes and the coaches. His main objective is the salvation of the Romanian sport for the Rio Olympic.

“I have filed my candidacy for president of the Romanian Olympic Committee and I will prepare my campaign. This month I have to convince clubs, federations and committee members that my program is viable, realistic and in accordance  with Romanian sport and Olympic spirit. It wasn’t an easy decision. Before I’ve made this decision I went to Izvorani where we were coaching  our girls for the European Championship. It was hard to convince myself to leave coaching, at least for a while. There are some rumors and omens that Rio Olympics will be a disaster for us. I think that those rumors are very pessimistic and I think it’s up to us, to manage to have our athletes do their best.” said Bellu.

In case he wins the election, Octavian Bellu wishes to stay involved in coaching beside the presidency : “One person can’t do everything, he needs a team of dedicated people who understand sports. I don’t have any other activities, business, preoccupations and if time will allow me I want to still be involved with coaching because it’s  not okay for me to leave some girls along the way, girls whom we have predicted to win medals in Rio. Gymnastics never failed to bring medals and Rio is not an exception.”

The elections for the presidency of the Romanian Olympic Committee will take place on the 29th of May.
