Russia’s Ksenia Afanasyeva had underwent a third surgery on her ankle yesterday in Germany.

Afanasyeva has said on VK that she can not say the surgery was easy and that  she will stay in Germany for two weeks and will be on crutches for six weeks.

The Russian gymnast who was named an alternate to the upcoming Russian European team, missed the last World championships due to pain in her ankle which she later had an unsuccessful surgery on in her home country. Afanasyeva then fled to Germany to undergo a second surgery in order to  fix the failed surgery.

The second surgery was called a success.

A few months after the second  surgery, the national team’s head coach Rodionenko gave an interview where she said Afanasyeva is expected to compete on vault and floor exercise at the European championships. The interview came as a shock to Ksenia who wrote on Russian social media site VK that she cannot be prepared on floor exercise by the time of the competition. She also added that Rodionenko shouldn’t have said such loud words.

Nevertheless, the World floor champion competed on vault and floor exercise at the last Russian championships with watered down routines.

Last year, Afanasyeva became for the first time in her career a European champion. The title was won on her strongest event, floor exercise.
