The all around gold is the most prestigious medal in gymnastics. In two of the most important competitions in the sport, two gymnasts were awarded the all around title.

During the 1985 World championship which was held in Montreal Canada, Soviet Yelena Shushunova and her teammate Oksana Omelianchik tied for the all around gold with score 78.663 beating the bronze medalist Dagmar Kersten of East Germany.

The stranger than two gymnasts tying for the World all around gold is that Yelena Shushunova and Oksana Omelianchik weren’t the original all around qualifiers as Olga Mostepanova and Irina Baraksanova outscored them. However, the Soviet coaches decided to replace Olga and Irina with Yelena and Oksana.

This was the first and only time that two gymnasts tie for the all around gold at a World championships, the closest to tie was in 2005 where the silver medalist U.S Nastia Liukin lost the gold medal with only 0.001 to her teammate Chellsie Memmel.

It was Omelianchik’s only all around World medal and Shushunova’s first of two, the second being a silver medal at the 1987 World championships.

Beside their all around gold medals, Omelianchik won the floor title while Shushunova won three more medals, a gold on vault a silver on floor and a bronze on balance beam.

Shushunova is one of the five gymnasts who succeeded in winning Olympic, World and European all around titles and Omelianchik was an alternate for the 1984 Friendship games and 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Fifteen years earlier at the 1971 European championship, Soviet Ludmila Turischeva and Tamara Lazakovich tied for the all around gold beating East Germany’s Erika Zuchold.

Like Shushunova, Turischeva is one of the five gymnasts who won all around titles at  European, World and Olympic games.

Lazakovich is the 1972 all around Olympic medalist as well as the silver medalist on beam and bronze medalist on floor.
