After the Universiade Games, where the Russian gymnasts won a total of five medals including two golds, Russian head coach Valentina Rodionenko expressed her disappointment by Maria Paseka's results.

Despite being the heavy favorite to win gold on vault, the Russian gymnast settled for the bronze medal after committing a grave error on one of her vaults. Paseka put her hands down to prevent herself from falling after landing the Amanar.

"We are very upset with Paseka, we have a lot of questions for her. It’s just awful" Rodionenko said in a statement to which was translated by "We don’t know what’s going on with her. She seems to be training, to be ready, but then she goes to compete and… The same happened to her at the Euros, the same happened now. We’ve always placed our bets on her on vault."

The gold medal went to Brittany Rogers of Canada, while the silver went to Paseka's teammate Lilia Akhaimova.

This is the second international competition this year for Paseka to not meet the expectations. She came in fourth place on vault at the European championships.

The four time Olympic medalist revealed during a TV interview after the Universiade Games that she was in tears after the vault final.
