UPDATE:  Head coach Valentina Rodionenko announced that Mustafina decided to train for the World championships despite her back pain.

Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina will miss the upcoming World championships which will be held  in Glasgow, Scotland from 23 October - 1 November.

Mustafina said that she took the decision of pulling out of Worlds due to back pain.

“Yes, I will miss Worlds and the main reason is the pain in my back. This is not a serious injury but it has been bothering me for quite a long time. As for my future, I can never predict it, that’s why I don’t want to talk about it. It is how it is now, but everything can change tomorrow” said Mustafina.

The Russian gymnast missed the last European championships to allow herself to recover from her injuries but competed at the European Games in June where she won three gold medals and a silver.

Glasgow will be the second World championships for Mustafina to miss since she turned senior in 2010, the first being the 2011 World championships.

Mustafina is now focusing on her preparation for Rio Olympics.
