Rebecca Andrade/Youtube |
A Brazilian news report, translated by our Brazilian translator Ivan Fernandes, featured Rebecca's injury.
Reporter : She is only 16 years, yet she speaks like someone who has experience. Maybe so, Rebecca Andrade has recovered so quickly from great frustration.
Rebecca: My year will be 2016. Obstacles arise, but I'm very strong and believe in myself and that's what matters.
Reporter: Last week, during training for the Pan American Games the gymnast fell on her vault's landing. She was diagnosed with complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.
Dr. Breno Schor (medical): It's a case that requires surgery, there was a rotation of the knee. She has instability in her knee. We need to operate on her knee. Will be 6 to 8 months of recovery.
Reporter: Rebecca is one of the promising Brazilian gymnasts. Beside the Pan American Games, she was preparing for the Worlds at Glasgow in October, a competition that guarantees the direct qualification of the top eight teams to the Rio Olympics. Jade Barbosa will be her replacement. No Rebecca, the odds can change.
Georgette Vidor : We had in mind that we will be competing against 3 or 4 countries. Now (without Rebecca), we will have about 6 to 8 opponents. The competition for us is much more difficult.
Reporter: Meanwhile, Rebecca will be, for the first time in her life, away from the apparatuses which she has known since she learned to walk. Hard, but Rebecca shows maturity.
Rebecca: I'll be back as soon as possible. I'll try harder than before. Gymnastics is my life.
