Retired American gymnast Shawn Johnson announced on her official Facebook page that she has undergone surgery for ACL, a torn medial and lateral meniscus.

"Only I would be on the operating table telling my surgeon to "have fun!" as I go under... Geesh. Haha ‪#‎kneesurgeryroundthree‬ ‪#‎hotmess‬"

"Let the road to recovery begin! Say a prayer I don't fall on my face on my crutches 🙈 ‪#‎clumsy‬"

"Realized I didn't tell you all what I did! Had to go in for ACL surgery and a torn medial and lateral meniscus! I'll keep you guys updated along the way" Johnson wrote on Facebook.

The former American gymnast tore the ACL, MCL and meniscus, along with her hamstring while skiing in early 2010. Her knee never returned to full strength and made her comeback journey, which she started after the surgery, very difficult.

Johnson could not  do the number of repetitions needed in order to master the skills and sometimes, she couldn't even work out because her knee was so swollen.

Internationally, she debuted her comeback performance at 2011 Pan American games where she won gold with her team and silver on uneven bars.

Two months before the London Olympics, she announced her retirement thus ending her comeback.

Johnson is one the most successful US gymnasts having won three gold World medals and four Olympic ones.

The 23 year old former Olympic champion was named as a cast member for the 2015 season of NBC's Celebrity Apprentice from which she was the sixth contestant fired.
